In today’s blog post, I’m sharing my thoughts and experiences of the Bold Hold Liquid Gold. Bold Hold Liquid Gold is an adhesive that keeps the lace of your wig in place. I’m going to share some background information about this brand and its product line first before going any further into reviewing the Bold Hold Liquid Gold.
Bold Hold is the name of the product line that is an extension of The Hair Diagram. The Hair Diagram is a black-owned hair business based in the United States, created by Tamika Gibson. The Hair Diagram provides wigs, wefts, closures, frontals, educational tools (videos, masterclasses, etc). Everything to help stylists master their skills and build a successful business in the hair industry. Bold Hold is a lace wig product line that contains everything to keep your lace in place or “attached” to your head.
Bold Hold Masterclass
I’ve visited one of Tamika’s masterclasses during her tour through Europe where she taught us how to use the Bold Hold Glue. This was when she first launched the “signature Bold Hold collection”. Back then the collection only consisted of four products; lace glue, lace tape, skin protectant, and a remover.
I remember her sharing her story and telling us that she created this line. It’s a safer alternative to the adhesives from other brands that already existed on the market. And I really liked that. Bold Hold offers many more products nowadays for almost every skin type. Have a look for yourself and visit the website.
What is Bold Hold Liquid Gold?
Bold Hold Liquid Gold is a glueless product. It has a gel-like to liquid consistency that gives a temporary hold to your lace. Bold Hold Liquid Gold is not a glue. This product comes off with water. It is a glueless alternative that makes it easy to put your wig on and take it off every day.
The Bold Hold Liquid Gold has multiple purposes according to Tamika. You can use it to lay down your edges, baby hairs, and to create the bald cap method. You can also use it in combination with other adhesives from the Bold Hold line. It is recommended to use the product in combination with the Bold Hold Skin Protect. The Bold Hold Skin Protect blocks out sweat which gives a longer and better hold.
An install with the Bold Hold Liquid Gold can last up to 3 – 5 days. This depends on the application, the type of products, and the amount of sweat production per person. Some people sweat more than others. The more you sweat the sooner the product will dissolve and loosen up.
How I use the Bold Hold Liquid Hold?
I use the Bold Hold Liquid Hold on a daily basis in combination with my everyday work wig. For example, I apply the product each morning when I get ready for work. and I take my wig off in the evening.
I don’t have time to do too much in the morning. I do the application part as quickly as possible, but I’ll explain what I do exactly in the steps below.
Wig application routine using the Bold Hold Liquid Gold
- I clean up my hairline with alcohol, by using some alcohol on a cotton pad and dabbing it on my hairline. I do this because the alcohol takes away any sweat and it also removes the oils from the products I use on my natural hair. Doing this step ensures the product will give a firm hold during the day.
- I try on my wig to see where It lays “naturally”. I don’t want my wig to lay too much in front and not too far behind my hairline. By doing this step I can see where I have to apply the Bold Hold Liquid Gold. But I fold the closure over first before I start using the product.
- I put the Bold Hold Liquid Gold on my hairline and I spread the product out with my finger.
- Then I fold the closure back and I make sure it falls on top of the product and I try to lay it as good as possible. If needed I also fix my baby hairs right away.
- I tie a scarf around my hairline while the product dries down. In the meantime, I go and get ready.
- By the time I’m ready, getting dressed, and doing my everyday make-up routine, I take the scarf off. If needed I fix the baby hairs and take off some white flakes with a wet cloth if I see any.
And I’m done, heading off to work! The application step takes me 5 minutes, sometimes 10 minutes to the max if I have a slow morning.
Wig removal routine using the Bold Hold Liquid Gold
- I soak a cotton pad up with water, I don’t squeeze the water out.
- I depp (don’t rub) the cotton pad that is soaked with water on the lace. If you rub the cotton pad on the lace it will ruin the way the baby hair lays and it will also cause bald spots on your lace.
I only depp the cotton pad on the part of the lace that has the temporary hold. By only focussing on that part of the wig, I don’t ruin the style the hair of my wig is in by wetting the hair. This prevents me from restyling my wig all over again. I don’t have time for that after work and I really don’t want to make time for that after work.
- The wig comes off right away and I place the wig on my canvas blockhead. I fix the baby hairs if I need to and closure dries in the same style during the evening.
- The next morning I repeated the application routine.
The removal part takes me less than 5 minutes.
My experience and review of the Bold Hold Liquid Gold
The first time I tried the product was in the summer. I added the product only to the baby hairs of my wig. It was a hot summer day and I didn’t feel like putting any effort to use the product under my lace to hold the closure down. I knew I was going to sweat and the closure would come off because the product is soluble in water.
The first thing I noticed is that the product was flaking and second it didn’t hold my baby hairs down throughout the day. I thought the flacking came from me using too much of the product. I wasn’t so happy with the product on my first trial and I gave it a rest.
The second time I used the product to hold my lace down. I tried to follow the exact steps that Tamika shares in her Youtube video. I did not use skin protection, she recommends, because I couldn’t find mine.
The product did not flake this time and it held on well throughout the day. There was one thing that bothered me and that was the shine. I don’t like the shine but Tamika recommends using the skin protectant to clean off the excess product and it helps with the shine.
I’ve used the Bod Hold Liquid Gold exactly like this since the second install was a success.
I use the product on a daily basis during a workweek and I noticed that the product gets built up in the lace. The build-up is noticeable on the fourth day. I have to wash the lace of my wig to have a clean application the next day.
If I don’t wash the lace of my wig the application or the part where the lace is attached to my head gives a white cast and I don’t like that. A colleague told me one time at work that my hair is white. It made me self-conscious since then and I pay attention to see if there’s built up.
Overall the product is very beginner-friendly because it’s easy to apply and take off. The product gives a good hold during the day.
Be Careful with fake Bold Hold Products
Bold Hold products are made in the US. The demand is probably high because there are a lot of fake Bold Hold Products. There are many companies selling these fake products that are made in China. These fake products cause people’s skin to break out and get rashes all over their hairline. If you would like to know where to get the official products you can visit Thehairdiagram’s Youtube and Instagram accounts. They share all the stores on their Instagram that sell their products and they also give tips on how to identify the fake products.
I hope this blog post was helpful to you. If you have any question please don’t hesitate to send me a comment, so I can answer them.
Thank you very much! Can you please test the difference between the active and the extreme bold hold?
